News - May 2022:

Finally, after a year worth of research, learning and sculptural work … may I present to you, my Brookgreen Medal, the 50th and the series … “Days of Silence, Nights of Song.”

I have carefully guarded this undertaking & I have greatly looked forward to sharing my contribution to this incredible collection!

Background: I created this work to speak to the polarized realities manifested within the wetlands and swamps of the Southeastern United States … in specific, The Fertility of Silence (the gathering of potential energy during daylight hours) … juxtaposed against the dynamic release of that gathered energy in the Celebration of Song (the croaking, chorusing, buzzing, barking and flashing that pulse and resonate as darkness falls).

Night/Day, Potential/Kinetic … Silence/Song ... Like so much about our world … my Medal seeks to explore the two sides/two visions that often occur within a singularity

Woven with archetypical, compositional zig-zag lines - as indicators of the “winding path” of life and the transience of each moment, this work has been created as an onion-skin … layered with symbol and meaning.

May it beckon your eye. May it inspire a question. May it make you smile and bring you happiness!

What an honor this past year has been!

My sincerest thanks to everyone at both the Brookgreen Gardens and Medalcraft Mint. And as always, my heartfelt thanks to my wife for her support and dynamic involvement in my work! JDW
